CENTRAL MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY SUMMER MUSIC INSTITUTE FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
REED MAKING CAMP FOR OBOE & BASSOON
June 16-21, 2019
![]() Join Dr. Lindabeth Binkley (oboe) & Prof. MaryBeth Minnis (bassoon) on the beautiful campus of Central Michigan University (Mt. Pleasant, MI) for a week devoted primarily to reed making! Who can attend? Students entering the 9th grade through their sophomore year of college are welcome. We encourage all levels of reed making experience to attend as basics are always covered. We also offer plenty of hints and tips that will help more experienced reed makers refine their skills. Is it only about reed making? We break up the reed making sessions with at least one daily performance master class on things like solo and orchestral repertoire, etudes, or fundamentals. We also include daily rehearsals in a Double Reed Ensemble and may even dabble in chamber music (trios, duets, etc.). A private lesson with Dr. Binkley or Prof. Minnis, is also an option. (Additional fee required.) Another highlight of the week is Double Reed Arts & Crafts night in which campers make their own reed drying rack and reed case. (We make A LOT of reeds and you will need something in which to take them all home!) In the evening, there are opportunities to attend Faculty & Staff Concerts, SMI organized social activities, and time to socialize with the other students involved in the CMU Summer Music Institute. (There are camps for flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and trombone occurring simultaneously with the Reed Making Camp.) What do you bring? An instrument, all your current reeds, and reed making tools (if you have them). We provide all cane for the campers, but you may bring your own if you so desire. What if you do not have tools and just want to give reed making a try? We have a limited number of reed making tool kits available for use during camp. If you decide to go for it and make reeds after camp, we will have a list of recommended tools and materials for you to purchase after camp. We always suggest, however, that you defer to your private teacher when it comes to investing in equipment. You should always purchase whatever they recommend since they will be working with you on a regular basis and may have specific preferences for materials. How much does it cost? Boarders: $570 (Includes Camp Tuition, Room & Board, and $45 materials fee) Commuters: $390 (Includes Camp Tuition, dinner Sunday/daily lunches, and $40 materials fee) What other Camps are happening as part of the CMU Summer Music Institute? The CMU Summer Music Institute also includes camps for Bassoon Reed Making, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, and Trombone. Visit the CMU Summer Music Institute page for more information.
